| Description | Project Background
In 1997 – 98 a Senior-Citizen Programme was completed in the USA with the object of making senior citizens able and skilled users of the Internet. This was carried out via a general qualification within the field of IT, creating social networks and the establishing of an Internet portal for senior citizens. The Internet portal became the pivoting point and meeting point of the project, and it continued after the conclusion of the project. The effect of this programme was so amazing that the most keen part of the American population on the Internet at that time was persons aged 55 plus. (Applicable to the Federal States participating in the Senior-Citizen Programme).
The idea of the Danish SeniorCitizen project is based on identical principles but it is the aim to cover a wider target group compared to the American project, for example by involving the potential aspects of digital TV in the project on an experimental basis. This allows the project to reach a group who has not been investing in any PC equipment but who is now mastering skills in operating a TV.
Project Commitment
It is the commitment of the project to develop, establish and operate a virtual, internet based seniorcity/Internet portal, providing for the senior citizens (55+), and enabling them to make use of the potential of the Internet as a natural thing.
The general purpose of the project is to enhance the options of senior citizens to take part in the life and development of Information Society through an increased knowledge and experience with information technology.
The project works concurrently with activities in 6 phases:
1. The Developing, establishing and operation of an Internet portal/Seniorcity: www.senior-city.dk
2. The establishing of network groups/hangouts/PC-cafés for seniors in the local communities, in the first phase in the municipalities of Hjørring and Brønderslev.
3. Education and training of ”fiery souls” and the development of support material for their activitites.
4. IT courses for senior citizens via the EUC NORD concept of Flexible learning.
5. Experimental and development activities towards an integration between digital TV and the Internet.
6. An ongoing evaluation of the project via the Internet.
The special feature of this project is its focus on the senior group with its own virtual, Internet based senior city.
The unique element of the project is that for the first time in Denmark we are trying to reach, involve and activate a target group that is not PC litterate at all by providing Internet access via the digital TV.
Project Results
This project will provide the following concrete results:
A virtual, Internet based senior city with offers for this very target group, including education, consultation, experiences etc.
The establishing of social networks, physical as well as virtual, among senior citizens.
An opening and testing of the new potentials of information society for IT-illiterates via an innovative fusion of Internet and TV.
