DescriptionThe ABM Cultural Database has nothing to do with the ABM-treatise. It is indeed a Website from where to open the collections of the Archives of North Denmark, the Libraries and the Museums. We are looking for the one tiny button that could tell us everything, knowing fully well that it does not exist, but anyway:
We will put our collections on display offering good tales and experiences. It could be a digital guided tour in the Aalborg Room, a gloomy tour in a bunker near Hirtshals, or in the Powder Magazine i Frederikshavn. It might also be illustrated memoirs from a hard working life in the town of Hjørring, or Gorm Henrik Rasmussen reading from the book on Jennerjahn, the town character of the Turn of the Century Aalborg. The good stories should open our eyes to the host of questions and answers held in the collections.
You may have moved to a flat in the Western part of Aalborg and would fancy learning more about the history of the house. A query in the ABM Database could provide information on a building case, photos, film clips, memoirs, descriptions of a town quarter, saved furniture or other household goods.
You might be a genealogist wanting to get behind the factual details of birth/deaths and get a feel of the workplace of that relative, the soccer association, or investigate whether he also took part in the political work in that local party organization…
You may be interested in issues relating to our times: - The buses making a traffic node on the Nytorv or a future third main artery crossing the Limfjord, -and you want to add a historic aspect. You come across traffic censuses dating back to 1947 relating to the first projected Egholm Crossing and the response from affected inhabitants of that day - or your attention is drawn to the debate in the 1890’ies concerning the ceaseless changing of horses on the Nytorv, which was a great nuisance to the shopkeepers…
You might be a research worker making extensive interdisciplinary queries, combining time, place, subject and type to your problem and perform queries that were otherwise infeasible in practice.
The key contents of the ABM Cultural Database should be a combination database for the merging of information from archives, libraries and museums. With each of the institutions remains years of digitalized recordings, that can be extracted to a common format and be viewed in a new query database. This makes them accessible to the public in one location, and for the first time they are represented in a new and dynamic context, enabling queries by person, subject, time and place in new ways. It could be claimed that this resembles opening the doors to the reading room and the stacks in one go, and that it enables searches that were previously for either the few, really competent users, or it would have been so time-consuming that it was never even tried. Experience from the Archive collections proves that even trained research workers are finding new and surprising elements in a combined query database.

In addition to providing the query database, the ABM Cultural Database should provide facilities for qualified electronic plots in the history of the region across earth finds, objects, photos, films, collections of documents, literature, newspapers etc. All the good locations and stories should be tied together in a unity that makes sense, and the IT-medium should be exploited to the full. An interactive user forum should be established for sharing experience, presenting papers and findings, perform open education programmes, producing educational material etc.

The tangible goal of the project is to develop, design, test and evaluate a cultural query database to be completed as a visible, usable result - accessible to all.
